Radio National’s Poetica was dedicated to Jennifer Maiden on Saturday (to be repeated on Thursday evening). It can be heard at this link:
Alice Parkinson and William Zappa read a number of poems from Pirate Rain lucidly (though words like insouciant and equinoctial tripped up the former’s tongue, and the line breaks do something on the page that it seems might be impossible to replicate in reading aloud), and there’s some commentary from the poet, which helps with the George Jeffreys / Clare Collins poems (which on this hearing sound to me like part of an ongoing novel). Maiden talks about the way fiction allows her to come closer to her own self than a lyrical poet–persona would.

My mother Jennifer Maiden and I thank Jonathan for his very valuable comments but were also concerned that someone couldn’t hear the ABC internet version, so we tried it. We found that by running the Windows Media extension suggested by that part of the site, it would play, but not otherwise. It is only the recorded program and not the announcer’s comments. The interpretations are those of the actors and producer, of course, not my Mum’s, but she said she much appreciated their interest in her work and that the contralto music (which seems like the original Anderson ) behind the Hillary and Eleanor poems is beautiful.

Yes, I’m sorry, I couldn’t figure out how to give a direct link to the audio. Though Radio National has scores of programs available as podcasts, Poetica doesn’t seem to be one of them. Thanks for commenting, Katharine. I loved that music too.
