Sarah Winman, Tin Man (Tinder 2017)
This is a gentle love story. It starts out with a man who we gradually discover is grieving for the loss of his wife and best friend in a car accident. Over the novel’s short length we discover the rich complexity of the relationships among the three of them, the depth of their loves, their joys and their sorrows, maybe particularly their sorrows: not a ménage à trois, but what one of the characters calls a mélange.
It’s very English, tactful when erotic, and filled with the kindness of strangers and the healing of wounds.
